Republicans accept donation from porn star

Do the national parties have to accept donations from individuals or groups that do not reflect the values of the party?

The Republican Party has positioned itself as friendly to family values. Yet, today, the Chicago Sun Times is reporting that the National Republican Congressional Committee has accepted a donation from former California gubernatorial candidate, and porn star, Mary Carey. Carey and her boss, adult film executive Mark Kulkis, are planning to attend the annual President’s Dinner, a Republican Party fund-raiser featuring President Bush.

Carl Forti, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, which is co-hosting the dinner, said:

“Their money was donated to the NRCC. The NRCC’s job is to elect Republicans. We’ll take that money and use it to elect more Republicans,” Forti said.

The NRCC certainly has the right to accept the funds; however, the paryt is sending the wrong message to the party faithful.

Joe, you asked "do they have to accept donations?"

No, they don't. Pragmatically speaking, however...they'd be fools to give money back.

This quote really says it all: " “Their money was donated to the NRCC. The NRCC’s job is to elect Republicans. We’ll take that money and use it to elect more Republicans,” Forti said."
